India's information technology sector employs over 5.4 million professionals and contributes nearly 8% of GDP. In 2025, the market is characterised by two seemingly contradictory forces: mass layoffs at large IT services firms on one hand, and acute talent shortages in specialist areas on the other.

Here is SForce's analysis of the key trends shaping IT hiring in India this year.

1. AI Skills Are the New Premium

Demand for professionals with AI/ML skills has grown 340% year-on-year in India (NASSCOM, 2025). Companies are not just looking for data scientists — they want engineers who can integrate AI into products, analysts who can work with LLMs and business leaders who understand AI's strategic implications. The premium for verified AI skills can be 60–80% above market rate for comparable experience.

2. Tier-2 Cities Are the New Talent Hubs

Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune remain dominant, but talent costs are pushing companies to look at Jaipur, Coimbatore, Nagpur and Indore. These cities have strong engineering college pipelines, lower cost of living (attracting candidates) and growing startup ecosystems. Companies that build a presence early will have a significant competitive advantage.

3. Return-to-Office Is Reshaping Talent Pools

The RTO mandates of 2024–25 have had a significant impact on hiring. Many professionals who relocated during remote-work years are now declining roles that require daily office presence. Companies offering hybrid models have a meaningfully larger addressable talent pool than those requiring 5 days in-office.

4. Contract Staffing Is Growing in Tech

Faced with uncertainty, many tech companies are shifting from permanent headcount to contract staffing. This benefits candidates who want flexibility and higher day rates, and companies that want to scale without long-term commitment. SForce has seen a 45% increase in IT contract staffing mandates in the first half of 2025.

5. Cybersecurity Is Critically Understaffed

India faces a shortage of approximately 800,000 cybersecurity professionals (DSCI, 2025). With regulatory requirements tightening and attacks increasing, security roles command significant premiums. CISO-level hires are among the hardest searches in the market.

Implications for Hiring Companies

The IT talent market rewards companies that move fast, offer genuine flexibility and invest in their employer brand. If your hiring process takes more than 3 weeks for a mid-level tech role, you will consistently lose to competitors.
